Daily Practice is Essential.

Many students who find Math difficult have simply failed to master the basic skills that make math at higher levels easy. While many parents are at a loss to help with daily homework, all parents can help their children master the basic skills!

Students should know how to add and subtract to 20 without using any aids.
Example: 9 + 8 should be automatic. You should not use fingers or anything else.
Subsequently 17 - 8 should be automatic as well.

Math in grade 8 and certainly in high school requires that students be able to quickly factor numbers or give multiples. Knowing the multiplication tables well is key.
For example students should be able to list all the factors of 24 quickly without the use of strategies or times tables.
They should know that 1 x 24 = 24, 2 x12 = 24 , 3 x 8 = 24, 4 x 6 = 24
Therefore, all the factors of 24 are:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24
This is essential for sucess in fractions.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE is the only way!

Things you can do at home.

Play Yahtzee!
Teach your child to play cribbage! Crib is a great way to practice addition and multiplication skills.
Use a deck of cards as flash cards. Take out the face cards, and then draw two cards. You can either add or multiply!
Practice in the car when you are driving! You can add the numbers on licence plates, multiply the numbers on road signs, the possibilities are endless!
